Quando diagnosticada ainda na fase de crescimento do paciente, uma opção de tratamento é o uso de aparelhos ortopédicos funcionais. O objetivo deste artigo é mostrar um caso clínico de uma má oclusão de 1/2 Classe II, 1ª divisão bilateral na dentadura permanente jovem, tratado em duas fases. Na primeira fase do tratamento foi utilizado o Ativador de Andreasen para correção da discrepância esquelética maxilomandibular normalizando as relações oclusais e em uma segunda fase o aparelho fixo para o refinamento da oclusão. Os mini-implantes foram uma revolução na realidade clínica da ortodontia, visto que possibilitam a ancoragem absoluta e a minimização de efeitos adversos em dentes adjacentes. A mecânica convencional, até então aplicada para o movimento intrusivo, é limitada e, em determinados casos, ineficaz. A complexidade desse movimento passa também pela necessidade de colaboração do paciente, a depender do tipo de mecânica adotada, o que, no caso do uso dos mini-implantes, não ocorre. O bom planejamento e a boa execução do miniimplante possibilitam acelerar o tratamento, uma vez que podem ser realizadas mecânicas concomitantes, por não haver dependência de evolução dos arcos para realização do movimento intrusivo. O uso do mini-implante necessita de cuidados e indicações precisas para que haja previsibilidade do resultado final de cada caso.
