Esses artigos científicos foram retirados de publicações de revistas indexadas entre 2003 e 2018. A pesquisa supracitada incluiu informações referentes a generalidades da fase de contenção, tipos de contenção, efeitos da contenção em variáveis como custo-eficiência, saúde periodontal, efeitos oclusais e efeitos da contenção em relação à higiene oral e da fala dos pacientes. Além disso, forneceu uma análise e avaliação de certos tipos de mecanismos de contenção sob variáveis previamente estabelecidas e características de tempo. Ao final da pesquisa, concluiu-se que a determinação do aparelho de contenção ideal dependerá das especificações próprias de cada tratamento ortodôntico e do critério do profissional em ortodontia, uma vez que, dada a gama de possibilidades de contenção disponíveis e a pouca informação sobre sua eficiência, torna-se impossível determinar conclusivamente a existência ou não de um dispositivo de contenção mais eficiente.
