Como não há espaço para a colagem dos acessórios ortodônticos, a sobremordida além de aumentar o tempo de tratamento, também pode provocar inflamações gengivais devido à dificuldade para a higienização. Ademais, com a eventual necessidade de colar acessórios ortodônticos mais para cervical, podem levar a alteração dos torques de aparelhos pré-ajustados. Durante elaboração do plano de tratamento o profissional deve-se levar em conta sua etiologia e relacioná-las ás opções de terapias de correção. Este trabalho objetiva mostrar as questões envolvidas no tratamento da sobremordida profunda sobressaltando as principais formas de tratamento. A sobremordida profunda pode ser corrigida através da extrusão de dentes posteriores ou intrusão de dentes anteriores. Para extrusão de dentes posteriores, tem-se utilizado aparelhagem fixa com utilização de arcos com curva reversa inferior e acentuada superior. Já na mecânica de intrusão de dentes anteriores, vem se reforçando o uso do arco base e o sistema de três peças, e assim obter o melhor controle de inclinação dos incisivos, durante a intrusão.
