Este trabalho se propõe a descrever sobre desgaste interproximal no tratamento ortodôntico, para correção do apinhamento dentário. Foi realizada uma revisão da literatura por meio de uma busca bibliográfica em bases de pesquisa online como Lilacs, Bireme, Medline e Pubmed, Science Direct e ainda, em diversas bibliotecas digitais produzidas por Universidades de vários estados brasileiros. Depois de revisar a literatura pode-se observar que os desgastes interproximais podem ser utilizados de diversos métodos como lixa de aço, pontas diamantadas em alta rotação, brocas de tungstênio multilaminadas, discos de lixa segmentado e inteiro acionado por baixa rotação e motor e tiras abrasivas acionadas por motor. Independente do método utilizado, é necessário se efetuar o polimento do esmalte dentário, que deverá ser realizado com discos finos e ultrafinos para diminuição de ranhuras. Este procedimento é contraindicado para apinhamento severo. A principal vantagem do desgaste interproximal é a redução do tempo de tratamento, pois a quantidade de esmalte desgastado corresponde, normalmente, ao espaço requerido. Como desvantagem destaca-se a irreversibilidade do procedimento. Conclui-se que o desgaste interproximal deve ser utilizado em pacientes com boa higiene bucal e baixa susceptibilidade a cáries; se efetuado com a técnica adequada, dentro dos limites indicados e com o devido polimento do esmalte o tratamento para correção do apinhamento dentário tem grande sucesso.
