Pretendendo preservar o volume ósseo alveolar, diversos cientistas indicam estratégias regenerativas para a manutenção do espaço alveolar com a utilização de biomateriais, que levam a reduzir o choque da reabsorção óssea durante o processo de modificação do alvéolo. Isso porque o paciente deseja sua reabilitação com rapidez e segurança ao sofrer a perda de um dente. Quando o conceito de osseointegração foi introduzido em 1960¹, um protocolo cirúrgico de dois estágios foi estabelecido, sendo considerado essencial para o sucesso da terapia com implantes.
