Seis ligaduras de diferentes fabricantes foram divididas em 6 grupos de 10 elásticos cada: Grupos P1, P2, P3, P4, P5 e P6 (Poliuretano). O ensaio de citotoxicidade foi realizado usando células de linha L-929, que foram submetidos ao teste de viabilidade celular com rede neutra ("absorção de tinta") em intervalos de tempo de 1, 2, 3, 7 e 28 dias. Foi utilizada análise de variância (ANOVA) com comparações múltiplas e o teste de Tukey (p <0,05).Houve diferenças estatísticas (p <0,05) na viabilidade celular entre os Grupos P1, P4, P2 e P3, e os Grupos P5 e P6 aos 1 e 2 dias. Todas as ligaduras elastoméricas foram consideradas adequadas para uso clínico. Na correção destas más oclusões, a extração de molares é uma alternativa eficiente em casos de camuflagem ortodôntica, ou ainda, pode ser aplicado com o objetivo de dissolver o apinhamento posterior em preparos ortodônticos para cirurgia ortognática, que corresponde a melhor resposta às queixas funcionais e estéticas desta deformidade. Esse trabalho se propõe apresentar o preparo pré-cirúrgico do paciente face longa, corrigindo o severo apinhamento posterior por meio da extração dos primeiros molares através de um caso clínico. O planejamento do caso foi feito em conjunto com o cirurgião, onde importantes avanços foram conquistados com uso de um sistema de baixo atrito para o alinhamento e nivelamento dos dentes, dissolução do apinhamento posterior, fazendo a coordenação inter-arcos e descompensação dentária. Parte-se do pressuposto de que uma das razões desse acréscimo seja a multiplicidade de opções de técnicas ortodônticas apresentadas pelos profissionais da área. Dentre os tratamentos disponibilizados estão alguns com evidente preocupação estética, mais requisitados por pacientes adultos. Tendo por alvo esse público, mais exigente, desenvolveu se a ortodontia lingual. Essa técnica, invisível devido à colagem de braquetes na superfície dentária lingual, apresenta características vantajosas que vão além da estética, sendo exitosa, também, na manutenção da superfície tecidos vestibulares da gengiva.
