Sua presença acarreta em um aumento transversal a fim de restabelecer uma relação equilibrada entre os arcos dentários. A expansão maxilar é obtida pela aplicação de força lateral na região das unidades dentárias superiores posteriores, resultando na separação da sutura palatina. Para obter uma boa expansão da maxila, é necessário que haja a disjunção da sutura palatina através de aparelhos ortopédicos. O presente trabalho em como objetivo fazer uma revisão de literatura sobre expansão rápida da maxila, utilizando um aparelho fixo denominado Hyrax.
