Um estudo transversal foi realizado em um hospital de referência no estado da Paraíba, sendo a amostragem feita por conveniência, composta por 52 pacientes com idades de 12 e 15 a 19 anos. Utilizaram-se como instrumentos de coleta duas fichas (exame clínico e entrevista) do levantamento SB Brasil 2010. A pesquisa foi realizada entre anos de 2011 a 2014. Os dados foram analisados no software R (versão 3.1.1), recorrendo à estatística descritiva e inferencial. Na descritiva, utilizaram-se valores absolutos e percentuais e medidas de tendência central e dispersão. Na inferencial, por intermédio da regressão logística binária, se identificou as variáveis significantes para explicar a vergonha de sorrir dos pacientes do estudo. Observou-se como fatores de risco para a vergonha de sorrir, ter desalinhamento maxilar (OR=6,59), relação molar alterada (OR=9,16), número de dentes cariados (OR=1,71), e presença de sangramento gengival (OR=15,88). Conclui-se que má oclusão, cárie dentária e gengivite são fatores associados à vergonha de sorrir nos pacientes pediátricos oncológicos. Title A name given to the resource Tratamento ortodôntico em adultos com comprometimento periodontal Subject The topic of the resource Monografia Description An account of the resource O objetivo do presente trabalho foi discutir, através de uma revisão de literatura, aspectos relacionados ao tratamento ortodôntico em pacientes adultos com comprometimento periodontal e avaliar as modificações nas condutas ortodônticas a serem tomadas durante a movimentação dentária nestes pacientes. O movimento ortodôntico em pacientes periodontais contribuiu para a melhora estética e funcional, além de reduzir as lesões infraósseas e, em alguns casos, aumentar a inserção óssea em movimentos intrusivos, uma vez que a movimentação seja conduzida em um periodonto reduzido saudável, caso contrário o processo de reabsorção óssea é acelerado. O tratamento visa restabelecer a função oclusal do paciente, como também resolver problemas de migração dentária, estética e saúde periodontal, reduzindo a possibilidade de perdas de dentes e de infecções gengivais decorrentes do mal posicionamento dentário. Dentes mal posicionados são considerados predisponentes para o surgimento da doença periodontal, pois dificultam a higiene bucal e retêm placa bacteriana. Recomenda-se um aparelho preferencialmente colado em vez de bandas cimentadas, e forças leves e intermitentes, além de excelente monitoramento da higiene bucal durante todo o período de tratamento e uma manutenção periódica após o término. Deve-se ter cuidado com a vestibularização dos incisivos centrais inferiores, pois aparentemente são mais susceptíveis a desenvolverem recessão gengival, pelo fato de possuírem osso vestibular delgado e consequentemente menor espessura gengival. Indica-se nestes pacientes com comprometimento periodontal um tratamento ortodôntico parcial, restrito às áreas onde a estética e função necessitam de melhora, devendo ser o tratamento mais breve possível. Quanto a contenção ortodôntica, recomenda-se contenção permanente fixa bi-maxilar.
