O tratamento da má oclusão de Classe II depende, tradicionalmente, da cooperação do paciente na utilização de aparelhos funcionais removíveis, elásticos Classe II ou aparelho de ancoragem extrabucal. Ao contrário, o aparelho de Herbst utiliza um sistema telescópico cimentado sobre os dentes, que posiciona permanentemente a mandíbula para frente, reduzindo a necessidade de cooperação do paciente.
